Africa South Field made history on the weekend of 21 to 23 May 2010 when they held the first Nazarene Missions International (NMI) field conference at the Good News Convention Centre in Johannesburg, South Africa. This conference was the first where all participants carried the entire cost of their food, accommodation, travel, and even literature.

Rev. Ezekiel Mnisi, Regional NMI representative to the General Board and Rev. Samantha Chambo, Regional NMI coordinator, were pleasantly surprised when 242 participants from all around the South Field paid their cost in full and in advance. The participants included district superintendents, pastors, lay leaders, NMI presidents and some of their board members.

Prayer was the main focus on Saturday morning. Rev. Collin Elliot, Africa South Field strategy coordinator, moved the crowd when he shared about the power of prayer from his personal life. This devotion was followed by a time of prayer where intercession was made for the leadership of the Church of the Nazarene and petitions were made for revival of mission on the Africa continent.

Chambo then reviewed the mission and vision of NMI and the role of prayer in mission. This led to a lively discussion on ways to encourage African Nazarenes to persevere in prayer. After lunch Mnisi led the crowd in a lively discussion on discipleship and giving, and the day ended of with another anointed service.

Dr. Filimao Chambo, Africa Regional director, encouraged the group to prepare the way of the Lord. He called participants to actively labor in making Christlike disciples while they relinquish the outcomes to the Lord of the harvest.

This conference has been a benchmark for NMI on the Africa Region. It revealed that Africans are willing and able to become an even stronger force of the mission of Jesus Christ on the continent. It brought many strategic leaders together who will be a positive influence in their respective districts and countries. It was an opportunity to brainstorm on ways to overcome some of the challenges faced on the field that were presented during the conference. Many participants agreed that they felt much better equipped to implement NMI on their districts after the conference.

Overall, it was a blessed weekend characterized by an outpouring of the Holy Spirit that united all participants in one Mission: to make Christlike disciples though NMI in Africa.
